The Butte College Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department offers quality education within a student-centered environment that provides comprehensive instruction through various modalities. The curriculum incorporates innovative teaching methods and flexible scheduling that foster critical thinking and support the needs of our diverse student population. The uniqueness of our integrative discipline is that we work to empower students to develop healthy behaviors, engage in physical activity, and promote healthy lifelong modifications, which can enhance their quality of life.
The Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department offers a comprehensive two-year program leading to an Associate of Arts Degree as well as an Associates of Arts Transfer Degree (AA-T)in Kinesiology. This major is designed for students who will transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a degree in Kinesiology and related degrees. Additionally, the activity courses within the Kinesiology Department are a mandatory requirement in area "F" for all students working towards their respective Associates degree.
Below are the SLO findings from Fall 2021.
KINESIOLOGY, PHYSICAL EDUCATION-ACTIVITY, & PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL
Kinesiology, PE Activity and PE Professional courses have seen a continuos decline since 2016 and a very sharp decent in 2020. Low enrollments in the college and the increase of online offerings campus wide have affected our enrollments. Students typically seek out our course offerings when on campus (face to face) to fill out their daily schedule. Many seek offerings for physical fitness, stress relief, student commaraderie, or to learn new skills. With the drop in campus enrollment due to the massive increase in online course offerings campus wide, these students are not taking an extra course for enjoyment, skill development, or stress relief as they normally would. Also, some Theory of Sport classes have seen a drop due to the suspension in collegiate coompetiton due to Covid 19 in 2019 and 2020. There also has been a lack of promotion to enroll in these classes during registration. Lastly, the drop also is due to the overall lack of enrollment in college as a whole.
To offset the current decline in enrollments, the department has been meeting to reverse these effects. Promotion of the department is currently underway with a video and website development. The scheduling of course sequencing and not overlapping of potential offerings has been instituted. Considerations for the new academic athletic counselor to promote the theory courses and potential Kinesiology majors have been ongoing. The department is also involved in high school outreach, the exploration of new course development, and improving the relationship with Cal State, Chico Kinesiology department. We have also increased our online offerings simply out of necessity to keep with the campus trends in other departments.
HEALTH
The enrollment numbers in our Health and Wellness sections have seen a sharp decline in the last two years. There are several reason for this. Due to the large increase in offerings in College and LIfe Success, Life Management, and Career Life Planning over the past three years, students have been redirected to these sections from Health 2 sections. Some of the current counselors teach these classes as well, and these sections tend to fill prior to that of Health and Wellness. The downward trend in enrollment is also an obvious factor in the decline.
The department will continue to work to promote the importance of Health and Wellness on our campus community and beyond. Especially with the current health issues, both physical and mental, Health and Wellness should be a priority for our stuent body population instead of an afterthought.
HEALTH RETENTION AND SUCCESS RATE
The health retention rates at 89% is in conjucntion with the college and has remained steady for the past five years despite more online sections being offered. The success rate has leveled off at 72% since a 5% increase since 2017. As a department, we are still exploring ways to improve retention in health sections. Most of the retention/relationships occur with interactions with the student body and opportunities to reach out to those in need is often difficult with a larger online presence.
KINESIOLOGY, PHYSICAL EDUCATION -ACTIVITY AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION- PORFESSIONAL RETENTION AND SUCCESS.
Despite the ever changing college environment at Butte, with Covid scheduling changes and an increase in online options, our retention rates still remain relatively high. We have seen a slight drop in success rates to 84%. The department feels this is partially due to classes offered in the online modality and the adjustments the student have to make for this learning style. The department will continue to explore options to improve success rates: by taking a deep dive by tracking data if they are specific courses, instructors, modailities and building on our facilities for learning.
DEGREES EARNED IN KINESIOLOGY
Our department has seen an increase in confered degrees the past couple years. The department feels this is largely due to the AA-T degree in Kinesiology. We also feel however, that if students were not required to take the Chemistry 110, 1 or 51 prerequisite to take Human Physiology we would see a huge increase in degrees confered. CSUC does not have this requirement, so many students transfer to CSUC prior to receiving their AA degree to take Human Physiology. Many other colleges do not have this requirement as well. The department will continue to explore options, communicate with our Biology department, and look into the viability of taking this course at another institution and transferring it back to Butte.
Health, Kinesesiolgy, and Athletics Department support the college in meeting its Strategic Direction and Priority Themes by:
Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Goal Achievement:
The department has been extremely involved in the area of completion and goal achievement. We have recently articulated courses within the AA-T degree through curriculum and CSUC kinesiology department. This will allow more of an option for students to meet their class requirement needs. The schedule within our dpeartment has been revamped: 1) Adjusting classes so they do not compete with one another for enrollment 2) Added online modalities to keep up with the trends of our college and to meet the students needs. The department is currently in the process of developing curriuculum to meet the needs of the students for transferability, general education requirements, and certification in specific disciplines within our major.
Supporting Student, Faculty, and Staff Success
The department has made continued efforts to support our faculty and staff. We have held monthly department meetings to address the needs of the student population and staff. With the use of technology and the increase in online modalities, faculty have worked with one another to share ideas and mentor others in development of online curriculum. Although, in our department, technology support form the college has been a challenge. Many of our faculty computers use Microsoft Windows 7 or earlier and do not have the capabilities to perform some of the required duties such as Distance Education Addendums, etc.. Faculty have had to use their personal home computers at times. A request has been continually made for improvement and was approved in Spring of 2021, but has yet to completion. Despite this, our department works together to progress forward.
Enhancing a Culture of Equity and Inclusiveness
Access and equity has, and will be, paramount in the Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department. Access to equipment, path of travel, and instruction are evaluated by the department on a continuous basis. With adaptive section offerings, opportunities for various levels of physical fitness, and making courses inclusive to all members of the student body population, the department enahances equitable learning environment.
Implementations:
Recommendations and actions to be addressed: (Statements from last Program Review)
The goals for the department will revolve around curriculum, course offerings, degree attainment, appropriate space and facilities, and the ability to provide a quality educational experience for the students. The schedule will continue to be refined to maximize enrollment, improve retention and overall student success. The department currently has plans to explore and begin development towards offering certification in areas of kinesiology, such as personal training and yoga. The department also has looks forward to finding promotional opportunities for our department. The department has plans to develop a informational video and website upgrades for the recruitment of potential kinesiology students. Currently, the department expresses concern over the lack of promotion for Health and Kinesiology department.
Strategy 1 - Course Strategy
The Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department will continue to refine its schedule and explore ways to offer courses that will be conducive with student needs (block, short term, and distance learning). The department will strive to offer courses and programs that reflect current trends, professional career needs, and student interests.
This strategy mirrors the recommendations of our Program Review Validation Team as well as Butte Colleges Educational Master Plan Priorities #2- Increase the Capacity and Capability of Faculty and Staff, #3- More Flexible Schedules/Alternative Delivery."
Strategy 2 - Explore Certificate Options
Kinesiology faculty are explrong certificate options in Yoga and Personal Training.
This aligns with the college's Vision of Success by offering programs that could lead to locall employment opportunities in the fitness industry. If the program is able to secure certification status, we could see an increase in enrollment in our department.
Strategy 3 - Marketing our department
Develop marketing materials to reach our potential audiences, such as individuals interested in: physical fitness, health care-athletic training/physical therapy, and coaching.
With the develpoment of marketing material, the department is hopeful that this will lead to an increase in enrollment and attract new students, and provide an opportunity to grow the department and it's offerings. This marketing effort could potentially reach diverse populations in our community and beyond to enter our program and attain a degree in kinesiology.
Strategy 4 - Facility Improvement
Improvement to classroom technolgy and educational space.
Improvements to our teaching modalities and technology, specifically, the department gym clasrooms and lack of a golf teaching area, will provide better instruction for our faculty and students. The golf area would provide a designated area for instruction to increase safety and potentially increase enrollment.

GYM 110 & 111 Updated Smart Classrooms | The GYM Smart Classrooms consist of antiquated and non-standard equipment, and are often rendered non-functional due to this equipment breaking. IT has done what they can to upgrade these rooms in piecemeal fashion with leftover equipment, but these rooms must be totally upgraded to bring them to standard and allow us to have a consistently functioning and positive student learning environment. IT estimates a cost of $32,000 per classroom ($25K for IT, and $7K for electrical contracting and facilities work) for all smart classrooms. |

Relocate and develop new golf facility | Golf needs an area that is allocated for golf only so classes can be taught without the worry of hitting someone in another class. Also, with the recent addition of the solar panels adjacent to the lower tennis courts, the golf classes no longer have a dedicated instructional area. |

Hire Full-Time faculty in Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics (Head Coach) | The Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics department is in need of a full-time instructor with the ability to teach all courses within our disciplines. The department recently had a faculty member retire midyear and currently have only one full-time faculty serve as a head coach out of our 12 athletic teams. The department also has only one female full-time faculty member. 80% percent of our faculty in our department are associate faculty. |
