This program is designed to provide quality education and vocational training for students at the basic skills levels in the areas of workforce preparation, job enrichment, and career retainment.
The focus of the Occupational and Life Skills (OLS) Certificate Program is to prepare students for community integrated employment. Two separate certifications may be obtained through an occupation specific certification and a Butte College Certificate of Completion. Students who complete the program will have proof of competencies through these certifications to present to potential employers. This certificate program requires successful completion of 6 courses in the OLS 324-329 sequence. Fall 2020, the OLS Program included two new classes for incarcerated students: OLS 340 and 341. These courses are interpersonal skills training courses and are in the process of becoming another certificate program. Due to the pandemic, these classes have not be offered yet.
Due to COVID closures, OLS classes have not been offered at the CHC since Spring 2020. A few courses were offered through the Distance Education Training Program and one through the Incarcerated Students Program. These classes had some interuptions of closures and SLO information was not retained because instructors felt the assessments would not be an accurate account of student achievement.
The OLS Department is reviewing additional opportunities to serve the student population in the community.
A better method for data collection such as SLO assessment results and guaging community needs are under development.
New marketing strategies are also being considered.
It is imperative that the OLS Department restarts the program at the Chico Center. Students need to complete their certificate program
The one time purchase of the learning kits will allow the CHC faculty and DE instructors to check out the kits to provide students with an occupational path and the completion of an additional certification from the company who supplies the kits. The certification would be within the student's chosen occupation.
The Program Review was included with the Community Partners in Education Program Review in Spring 2018.
1. Creation of budget for one-time purchase of hands-on occupational training kits for the completion of the
certification required in OLS 329
2. Develop a better marketing stategy
3. Develop a better method to collect SLO information from the DE and Incarcerated
instructors
Strategy 1 - Create a budget for $10,000 to purchase instructional learning kits for oLS 329
Create a budget for a one time purchase of $10,000 for hands-on learning kits with curriculum that will provide a certification at the end of the learning module for the eight areas listed in OLS 329, in addition to other operating costs and supplies.
The OLS Program does not have a separate operating budget. It is funded through the Community Partners in Education (CPE) budget for Instructional Service Agreements. The OLS certificate program is required to provide a certification in greenhouse and nursery operations, hospitality, irrigation, retail sales, small engine repair and warehousing for OLS 329. This course was designed to allow for kit learning for our student with disabilities. To purchase reuseable kits for each area of student would cost $10,000.00. The high schools could check them out to help high school students complete their certificate program.
