Job Placement/Cooperative Education
Mission Statement
Butte College Job Placement & Cooperative Education Office (JPCE) aims to educate students in all aspects of the job search process. We assist students in obtaining employment by providing them with techniques for effective application materials including: resumes, cover letters, applications, social media presences, etc. We also help students prepare for interviews and obtain jobs as well as gain work experience through paid and unpaid internships. We collaborate with on and off campus employers to best serve the needs of the students, the campus and our community.
Program Description
JPCE assists students in securing employment in order to gain valuable experience, career-related on the job skills, earn income to support their education, earn academic credit for workplace learning and meet the needs of the labor market. Staff work with faculty to provide resume and interview related information in classroom settings and work with service area employers to assist in filling the workforce needs.

Student Learning/Administrative Unit Outcomes
Student Learning Outcomes for JPCE are related to resumes. The Job Placement team will continue to assess pre and post knowledge after student appointments.

In terms of assisting student complete their academic goals, the JPCE:
- Offers internships through Career Work Experience;
- Increased outreach to local employers and campus departments hiring students;
- Help students confirm their interests through experiencial learning;
In terms of assisting with student retention and transfer goals, the JPCE:
- Assist students to find jobs that coincides with their class schedule so they can earn money while remaining in school;
- Facilitate additional funds for students through Federal Work-Study;
- Encourage citizenship through Community Service Federal Work-Study and
- Collaborate with other work study programs like CalWORKs, Inspiring Scholars (foster youth) and EOPS to place eligible students in jobs.
Strategic Direction
- Staff foster a culture of inclusivness by participating in workshops and trainings on campus and in the community;
- By assisting students find jobs on campus, they feel more included in our campus community, are able to network with staff and faculty and are able to parlay their experience at Butte College to find related employment after completion;
- We have improved processes by converting our job board to Colleague that is completely online and allows for expanded data and other information;
- We help students secure housing by offering to help write housing resumes and assist students to apply for CalFresh benefits and
- Support enrollment and achievement goals by having timely one-on-one appointments available for students and the general public.

The goals of the JPCE Office include:
- Expanding Resources, Awareness and Marketing to encourage students to use services at the JPCE office;

- Continue to collaborate with the RoadRunner Hub and Student Success Services;
- Establish on-going Community Service Federal-Work Study literacy placement with Butte County Library;
- Grow participation in annual job fairs and
- Inclusion of Career Work Experience in the Guided Pathways Framework.

Strategy 6 - Inclusion of Career Work Experience in the Guided Pathways Framework
In order for the Cooperative Education/Career Work Experience (CWE) to effectively assist students get experience in their field, CWE class needs to be added into the Guided Pathways program maps. CWE gives students the needed experience to put on their resume, network in their industry or field of study, earn a grade while completing required field experience hours, and be successful in a competitive job market. Completion of Work Experince often leads to post-graduation hiring on and off campus.
As an unintended consequence of reducing the number of units needed for degrees, Work Experience was excluded from the Guided Pathways maps. As a result, we have seen a significant decline in enrollment and the associated experiencial learning. Additionally, employers are reporting students need related work experience in order to complete and be successful in the job market.
